Levittown Animal Hospital offers a flexible externship and preceptorship program for veterinary students. This program is designed to provide practical, hands-on experience in a contemporary small animal practice, helping students build technical, communication, and problem-solving skills. Each student is assigned a mentor to provide instruction, support, and a formal performance evaluation at the end of the rotation.
What you'll do#
Externs participate in the daily operations of a small animal practice under the supervision of a mentor doctor. Responsibilities include:
- Gathering patient histories and performing physical examinations.
- Developing diagnostic and therapeutic plans for medical cases.
- Assisting in surgery and providing wellness care.
- Participating in all aspects of patient care activities.
- Developing client communication skills.
- Producing accurate medical records, including SOAPs, within daily practice time limits.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited DVM program.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Proof of professional liability insurance (a certificate of coverage is required).
- Professional conduct and adherence to the Veterinary Practice Act and practice standards.
Location & details#
- Location: Levittown, New York.
- Modality: On-site.
- Schedule: Flexibility is offered for rotations ranging from two to eight weeks, with schedules including days, evenings, and weekends.
- Compensation: A stipend of $250 per week is provided.
