DVM Student Externship/Preceptorship Program

About the role#

Levittown Animal Hospital offers a flexible externship and preceptorship program for veterinary students. This program is designed to provide practical, hands-on experience in a contemporary small animal practice, helping students build technical, communication, and problem-solving skills. Each student is assigned a mentor to provide instruction, support, and a formal performance evaluation at the end of the rotation.

What you'll do#

Externs participate in the daily operations of a small animal practice under the supervision of a mentor doctor. Responsibilities include:

• Gathering patient histories and performing physical examinations.
• Developing diagnostic and therapeutic plans for medical cases.
• Assisting in surgery and providing wellness care.
• Participating in all aspects of patient care activities.
• Developing client communication skills.
• Producing accurate medical records, including SOAPs, within daily practice time limits.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in an accredited DVM program.
• Authorization to work in the United States.
• Proof of professional liability insurance (a certificate of coverage is required).
• Professional conduct and adherence to the Veterinary Practice Act and practice standards.

Location & details#

• Location: Levittown, New York.
• Modality: On-site.
• Schedule: Flexibility is offered for rotations ranging from two to eight weeks, with schedules including days, evenings, and weekends.
• Compensation: A stipend of $250 per week is provided.
