About the role#
The Space Science Institute at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory offers undergraduate research opportunities for the Summer 2027 term. Interns work directly with scientists on projects spanning astrophysics, cosmology, planetary science, and technology development. This is a full-time, on-site program designed to provide practical experience in a national laboratory setting.
What you'll do#
- Collaborate with scientists on research projects in astronomy or planetary science.
- Conduct experiments, perform data analysis, and build modeling simulations.
- Carry out isotopic analysis of planetary materials.
- Perform scientific assignments at an appropriate level of complexity.
- Analyze research results and provide weekly progress updates.
- Share your findings through formal presentations or poster sessions.
- Support other laboratory duties as assigned.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment as a continuing student in good standing at an accredited institution.
- Pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in Physics, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Demonstrated academic achievement in astronomy, planetary science, or a related discipline.
- Ability to apply scientific or engineering principles to solve technical problems.
- Familiarity with modern computer-based data analysis.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work well in a team.
- Eligibility to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112 of the NDAA.

- Location: Livermore, California.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Modality: This is an on-site position requiring full-time presence.
- Compensation: Paid internship with a pay range of $23.26 to $31.62 per hour, based on a step structure determined by your completed academic years.
