About the role#
The Space Science Institute at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory offers graduate students practical research experience. Interns join projects led by laboratory scientists in areas such as astrophysics, cosmology, planetary science, and instrument development. This program provides an opportunity to contribute to research in fields like optical astronomy, cosmochemistry, and planetary defense.
What you'll do#
- Work with scientists on research projects involving experiments, data analysis, theory, or modeling.
- Conduct research under close supervision.
- Perform scientific assignments at an appropriate level of complexity.
- Work collaboratively on research and development projects.
- Analyze results and provide weekly updates to your team.
- Present your work through presentations or poster sessions.
What you'll need#
- A bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, or a related field by the start of the internship.
- Enrollment in good standing in a master’s or PhD program, or the intent to pursue a PhD in astronomy, planetary science, or a related field.
- Demonstrated academic achievement and a clear interest in advanced research.
- Ability to apply scientific or engineering principles to solve technical problems.
- Familiarity with computer-based data analysis and summarizing results.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work well in a team environment.
- Eligibility to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112 of the National Defense Authorization Act.

- Location: Livermore, California.
- Term: Summer 2027 (10-12 weeks).
- Modality: Full-time, on-site.
