About the role#
This internship provides practical research experience within the Strategic Deterrence Directorate. You will work on projects that combine theory with computation, focusing on fields such as nuclear physics, radiation transport, hydrodynamics, astrophysics, plasma dynamics, numerical methods, and computer science. This is a full-time, paid position for Summer 2027.
What you'll do#
- Develop or employ high-performance scientific software to complete research tasks.
- Work with mentors under close supervision on assigned projects.
- Present an oral presentation of your work at the end of the summer.
- Share your findings at a poster session.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited university pursuing an undergraduate degree in Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, or Computer Science.
- A GPA of 3.5 or above.
- Ability to apply basic principles of physics, engineering, or computer science to solve technical problems.
- Experience with coding languages such as Python or C++.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- U.S. citizenship is required.
Location & details#
- The role is based in Livermore, California.
- This position follows a hybrid schedule, with the flexibility to work from home one day per week.
- Applicants must pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test, including testing for marijuana.
