About the role#
This internship provides graduate students and recent graduates with practical research experience within the Strategic Deterrence Directorate. You will work on projects combining theory and computation to support our research goals. This is a full-time, paid position for the Summer 2027 term.
What you'll do#
- Conduct research in areas such as nuclear physics, radiation transport, hydrodynamics, astrophysics, plasma dynamics, numerical methods, and computer science.
- Develop or use high performance scientific software to complete research tasks.
- Work with mentors under limited supervision on assigned projects.
- Take on projects of increasing complexity while exercising freedom to develop fundamental solutions.
- Present your findings through an oral presentation and a poster session at the end of the summer.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a graduate degree program or a completed Bachelor's or Master's degree in Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field.
- A GPA of 3.5 or above and a track record of achievement in your field of study.
- Experience applying basic principles of physics, engineering, or computer science to solve technical problems.
- Coding experience in languages such as Python or C++.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.
- U.S. citizenship is required due to federal regulations.
- Math, Physics, and Engineering majors should intend to complete a Ph.D.
Location & details#
- This role is based in Livermore, California.
- The position follows a hybrid work schedule, allowing for one day of remote work per week.
- Selection requires passing a post-offer, pre-employment drug test, including testing for marijuana.
