About the role#
Kitware is looking for a Physics-Based Modeling Research Intern to join the Computer Vision team. You will build computational models of biological systems to support research in medical imaging, biomechanics, and physiology. You will work with software developers, AI researchers, and clinicians to create models that address scientific and clinical questions.
What you'll do#
- Develop computational and mathematical models of the human body and physiology.
- Create patient-specific models using medical imaging data like CT, MRI, ultrasound, and microscopy.
- Design and implement biomechanical, physiological, or multi-physics simulations.
- Collaborate with software engineers to integrate models into research software and production applications.
- Validate models against experimental or clinical data.
- Work directly with clinicians, researchers, and sponsors to identify technical requirements.
- Contribute to open source software and explore opportunities for publication.
What you'll need#
- Currently working toward a Master’s degree or PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Biology, Applied Mathematics, Bioengineering, or a related field.
- Experience building computational or mathematical models of the human body.
- Strong programming skills in C++ or Python.
- Experience with scientific computing and numerical methods.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work in multidisciplinary research teams.
- U.S. citizenship is required for this role.
- Familiarity with the Pulse Physiology Engine, Finite Element Analysis, Biomechanics, CFD, cardiovascular modeling, digital twins, multiscale modeling, medical image segmentation, or AI/machine learning is preferred.
Location & details#
- This position is located in Carrboro, North Carolina.
- You must be able to work on-site 5 days per week.
- This is a paid, full-time internship.
