About the role#
This internship focuses on the intersection of power systems, computing, and energy innovation. You will join the Advanced Technology Solutions department to explore how flexible data center workloads affect grid reliability, transmission congestion, and renewable energy integration. The project examines migratory computation to determine how shifting computing workloads across time or location can create operational value for the electric grid.
What you'll do#
- Conduct research on emerging industry approaches to flexible electricity loads.
- Analyze simplified grid scenarios to test system impacts.
- Communicate findings on how flexible data center demand influences transmission congestion, renewable energy utilization, and grid reliability.
- Provide insights that may inform future transmission planning, large-load integration, and operating strategies.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a PhD or advanced degree program in electrical engineering, power systems, computer science, operations research, data science, or applied mathematics.
- Experience with Python, data analysis, modeling tools, or technical research.
- Interest in power systems, energy markets, optimization, large-scale computing, or clean energy integration.
- Strong written communication and problem-solving skills.
- A willingness to explore emerging questions.
