About the role#
HyperLight is looking for an R&D Operations & Automation Engineer Intern to join our engineering team. You will work at the intersection of R&D operations, data analysis, and photonic technology. This role focuses on improving how we plan, execute, track, and analyze development activities. You will help identify workflow bottlenecks, build automation tools, and use data to increase engineering efficiency.
What you'll do#
- Support the planning, tracking, and execution of R&D projects, experiments, and engineering lots.
- Analyze R&D workflows to find inefficiencies and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Develop automation solutions and engineering tools to reduce repetitive manual work.
- Use programming, data analysis, and dashboards to automate tasks and improve visibility into R&D activities.
- Analyze operational data to identify trends and root causes, supporting data-driven decisions on cycle time and execution.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to standardize workflows, write SOPs, and drive continuous improvement.
What you'll need#
- Current pursuit of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field.
- Programming experience with Python or similar languages for data analysis or automation.
- Strong engineering fundamentals and analytical problem-solving skills.
- Ability to translate complex engineering data into practical improvements.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to navigate complex engineering workflows.
- Self-motivation and a detail-oriented approach to solving open-ended problems.
- Strong communication skills to collaborate across different engineering disciplines.
- Experience with AI/LLM tools, agentic workflows, photonics, semiconductor fabrication, or laboratory equipment is a plus.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, on-site internship located in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
- The role is available for a 12 to 16 week term between October 2026 and May 2027.
- Compensation is $28 to $34 per hour, with commuter benefits provided.
