The Google Cloud and AI Infrastructure team builds the hardware that powers Google services, including Google Cloud and advanced models like Gemini. As a PhD intern, you will work on fundamental problems at the intersection of hardware, software, and algorithms. You will collaborate with researchers and engineers to influence our custom silicon portfolio, including TPUs and SoCs. Specific projects are tailored to your background and skills.
What you'll do#
- Collaborate with engineers and researchers to shape the future of Google Cloud and AI infrastructure.
- Tackle challenges across the system stack, from hardware design to software integration.
- Contribute to projects that directly impact our custom silicon portfolio.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
- Project or coursework experience in architecture and RTL, verification and validation, physical design and circuits, systems, or test and CAD.
- Experience with programming or scripting languages such as Python, Tcl, Perl, or C++.
- Available to work full time for 12 weeks outside of university terms.
- Currently in your penultimate academic year or returning to a degree program after the internship.
- Research experience in areas such as high-performance or low-power architectures, domain-specific accelerators, memory hierarchies, coherent interconnects, or advanced packaging and chiplets.
- Experience developing CAD/EDA design flows or applying machine learning to chip design automation.
- Understanding of advanced ML/DL model architectures with experience in performance modeling, cycle-accurate simulation, or custom AI accelerator evaluation.
- Familiarity with industry-standard EDA tools.
- A demonstrated research track record with publications in conferences.

How to get in at Google
Applying to Google early provides a distinct advantage because recruiters review applications before the volume becomes unmanageable. Intern Insider sends an instant alert the moment a role matching your target is published, helping you apply among the first. This keeps you ahead of the pile when competition is high. You can also improve your response rates by reaching out to recruiters directly. Intern Insider surfaces the specific recruiters behind Google roles, allowing you to ask relevant questions or request a referral. This direct approach often yields better results than submitting to a general queue.
