About the role#
Ginkgo Bioworks is building a Total Autonomous Lab where scientific experiments are requested via code and executed by robots. We are looking for a Software Intern to help develop the digital systems that run this facility. You will work with Catalyst, our software stack that manages fleets of Reconfigurable Automation Cells. This position is a fit for engineers interested in applying software skills to physical systems or scientists who want to transition into autonomous execution.
What you'll do#
- Write and refine Python-based protocols using the Catalyst Client to control liquid handlers, plate readers, and robotic arms.
- Assist in the development of the Catalyst Agent, which is an interface that allows scientists to launch experiments using natural language.
- Build data pipelines to harvest, structure, and upload experimental data from lab cells into our data lake.
- Integrate new hardware instruments into the Catalyst ecosystem by writing drivers that allow our software to communicate with lab tools.
What you'll need#
- Strong proficiency in Python.
- Interest in Lab-in-the-Loop technologies where AI models drive physical experimentation.
- Interest in biological data standards and laboratory automation.
- Experience with hardware control or APIs is a plus.
- No college degree is required, but you must have skills in coding or related technical areas.
Location & details#
- This role is based in Emeryville, California.
- This is an on-site position requiring attendance five days a week.
- The internship is full-time and paid.
- The base salary range is $37,700 to $53,500 depending on skills and experience.
