The Life Support Systems (LSS) Intern will assist with the daily operation and maintenance of aquatic animal habitats and the Water Quality Lab at the Georgia Aquarium Animal Care Facility. This role involves working closely with senior staff to monitor equipment, perform water quality testing, and maintain accurate records for the department.
What you'll do#
- Perform routine water quality analyses using spectrophotometry, titrations, and electrode methods.
- Monitor LSS and laboratory equipment to ensure normal operation, making adjustments as required.
- Prepare samples for testing and maintain detailed logs and records.
- Utilize computerized control systems to monitor and modify system operations.
- Handle and dispense chemical additives in accordance with safety requirements.
- Maintain a clean work area and strictly follow all safety policies and procedures.
- Communicate equipment status, process updates, and potential issues to the LSS team.
What you'll need#
- A 4-year degree in Biology, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Nursing, or Public Health, or progress toward such a degree. Equivalent experience at an aquatic animal facility will also be considered.
- Working knowledge of freshwater and seawater chemistry as it relates to aquatic animals.
- Laboratory experience, including familiarity with safety, workflow, data management, and quality control.
- Experience using hand and power tools and shop equipment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.

- Location: Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
- Term: Fall 2026.
- Modality: On-site at the Animal Care Facility. Interns must provide their own reliable transportation.
- Compensation: This is a paid, full-time internship.
- Requirements: Candidates must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks such as climbing, balancing, and kneeling.
