About the role#
Highway Design Interns assist in the planning, design, and development of transportation infrastructure projects. You will work under the guidance of experienced engineers and project managers to apply engineering principles to highway reconstruction, roadway widening, and intersection improvements. This position involves contributing to multidisciplinary teams on projects that improve transportation networks.
What you'll do#
- Assist with the preparation of highway design plans, details, and construction documents.
- Support roadway design tasks including alignments, profiles, cross sections, grading, drainage, and maintenance and protection of traffic plans.
- Perform engineering calculations, quantity takeoffs, and basic technical analyses.
- Collect, review, and organize field, traffic, and project-related data.
- Prepare drawings, exhibits, visual aids, and supporting documentation using engineering design software.
- Assist with the development of project reports and cost estimates.
- Participate in field visits, site investigations, and construction observations.
- Attend project team meetings and coordinate with engineers, planners, surveyors, and other technical staff.
- Assist with the preparation of permit applications and coordination documents.
- Support public involvement activities and attend client, agency, and public meetings.
What you'll need#
- Interest in transportation engineering, roadway design, highway reconstruction, and related infrastructure projects.
- Current enrollment in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in civil engineering or a related discipline from an ABET/EAC accredited program.
- Self-motivation and a strong work ethic.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to multi-task and work under pressure.

- Compensation: $21.80 to $28.00 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.
