About the role#
The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression offers a 10-week, full-time summer internship for undergraduate students interested in civil liberties and free speech. This program provides hands-on experience working with our staff on research, policy reform, and media projects. Interns participate in weekly seminars with experts to discuss the foundational arguments for protecting rights in a free society.
What you'll do#
- Support our student development, defense, policy reform, legislation, development, and media teams with research and administrative tasks.
- Assist in planning and running the FIRE Student Network Summer Conference.
- Lead educational and interactive sessions for conference attendees.
- Serve as a residential counselor during the Free Speech Forum, where you will provide supervision, mentorship, and facilitation of educational activities.
- Contribute to the FIRE Newsdesk.
What you'll need#
- You must be an undergraduate student who will be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior at a college or university in the United States.
- A strong interest in free speech and civil liberties is essential.
- We look for excellent research, writing, and communication skills.
- You should be organized, responsible, and ready to take initiative.
- You must be collaborative, open to feedback, and able to work under pressure.
- A sense of humor and a willingness to engage with diverse viewpoints are important.
Location & details#
- This internship is based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
- The program runs full-time from June 1, 2027, through August 6, 2027.
- This is a paid position with a $6,400 stipend plus additional compensation for counselor duties.
- The role is strictly on-site and requires a full-time commitment of 40 hours per week.
