About the role#
The Dental Assistant Extern role provides support to the dental department as a volunteer. This position offers students the opportunity to gain knowledge of community health care through exposure to the Family Health Centers of San Diego community health model. Externs work under the direct supervision of the Dental Clinic Coordinator and team members to maintain an efficient department.
What you'll do#
- Provide support to an assigned department as a volunteer.
- Assist team members in maintaining an efficient dental department.
- Perform volunteer duties within the scope of your assignment under direct supervision.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited school for a dental assistant certification or degree.
- Interest in the mission of Family Health Centers of San Diego.
- Ability to work effectively with patients from diverse social, cultural, and economic groups.
- Intermediate interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Ability to work well both independently and in a team-based environment.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate cultural sensitivity.
- High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
- Fluency in Spanish, English, or Arabic is desired but not required.
Location & details#
- This is an on-site, unpaid volunteer position with a rolling term.
- Locations include various sites across San Diego, California, including Gateway, Hillcrest FHC-Annex, Diamond Neighborhoods FHC, Grossmont Spring Valley FHC, and North Park FHC.
