About the role#
The Surgical R&D Co-Op is a one-year program based in Austin, Texas. You will join a new product development team to assist engineers and managers through the full project lifecycle, from initial proposal to final design and release. This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week position starting in Summer 2027.
What you'll do#
- Identify surgeon requirements and define product characteristics.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Manufacturing Engineering, Purchasing, and Regulatory.
- Assist Product Development Engineers with product designs and documentation.
- Create and update 3-D models and detailed engineering drawings.
- Manage project documentation for the Design History File (DHF) and Design Dossier.
- Develop project plans and track progress using planning software.
- Coordinate with internal prototype shops or external vendors to build prototypes.
- Participate in surgeon symposia, focus groups, and surgical laboratory demonstrations.
- Maintain existing product lines and write Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) for improvements.
- Schedule and lead product team meetings to ensure project timelines are met.
What you'll need#
- Completion of at least the first two years of an undergraduate engineering degree.
- Current enrollment in a Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering program with a mechanical track emphasis.
- A minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
- A strong interest in medical devices or orthopedics.
