About the role#
The Government Relations Intern supports the Communications and Customer Service group by managing engagement efforts, systems, and processes. You will help provide information to elected officials, Tribal government entities, and state agencies about programs and services. This role offers exposure to Oregon policy-making processes, including legislative bill tracking and Public Utility Commission rulemaking. You will report to the Government and Stakeholder Relations Lead.
What you'll do#
- Coordinate team responsibilities for the legislative session, including tracking deadlines, scheduling meetings, and drafting updates.
- Monitor state legislative proposals, committee hearings, and floor debates.
- Assemble information to respond to inquiries from legislators and community stakeholders.
- Track and synthesize findings from Oregon Public Utility Commission rulemaking and state agency workshops.
- Develop and distribute district-level reports for state legislators.
- Maintain tracking software, process documentation, and the Local and Tribal Government Energy Planning spreadsheet.
- Collaborate with communications, marketing, and web teams on messaging and materials.
- Attend and take notes at energy, climate, and environmental justice coalition meetings.
What you'll need#
- College or graduate level coursework in public policy, communications, journalism, energy, or related fields.
- Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and database software.
- Proficiency in cloud-based applications for project coordination, management, and file sharing.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- High organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and reprioritize as needed.
- Ability to work independently and as a contributing team member.
- Experience working collaboratively with people of diverse backgrounds and comfort in culturally diverse settings.
Location & details#
- Location: Portland, Oregon.
- Work Modality: Hybrid (requires reporting to the Portland office at least quarterly).
- Schedule: Part-time, 15-20 hours per week.
- Compensation: $18.00 per hour.
