About the role#
Corning is seeking an Advanced Process Controls Intern to join the Manufacturing, Technology and Engineering division. You will work in a hands-on engineering environment, applying controls, optimization, data analytics, and machine learning to manufacturing challenges. The role involves contributing to project work while learning how advanced control technologies are developed, tested, and transferred into production. You will have the opportunity to work with experienced engineers on model-based control, process monitoring, fault detection, and predictive maintenance.
What you'll do#
- Support the design, development, testing, and documentation of process control solutions within multidisciplinary teams.
- Analyze process data and manufacturing trends to identify opportunities for improved stability, quality, and throughput.
- Assist with controls-oriented modeling, system identification, and simulation of PID and model-based control strategies.
- Contribute to advanced control concepts like model predictive control under the guidance of senior engineers.
- Build prototype optimization or analytics models using tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, or Python.
- Apply statistical methods or machine learning techniques to process monitoring, defect classification, and predictive maintenance.
- Collaborate with subject matter experts to translate manufacturing requirements into technical tasks.
- Prepare technical summaries, code, and models to share results with stakeholders.
- Complete an internship project with defined deliverables and present your recommendations at the end of the assignment.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. program in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or Systems Engineering, Operations Research, Computer Science, Data Science, or Applied Mathematics.
- Foundational knowledge of process controls, dynamic systems, statistics, optimization, or machine learning.
- Programming experience in Python, MATLAB, Simulink, or a similar technical computing environment.
- Ability to analyze data, build models, test hypotheses, and communicate findings clearly.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn new engineering tools.
- Comfort working in a manufacturing environment, including following safety procedures.
- Coursework or project experience with model predictive control, PID control, or system identification is helpful.
- Familiarity with numerical optimization, machine learning, multivariate analysis, or version control software like Git is a plus.
- Ability to work effectively both on team-based projects and independently.

- Compensation: $1,635.00 to $3,185.00 biweekly, based on location, position, and year in school.
