Cornell Cooperative Extension is offering a paid summer internship focused on the shellfish grow-out program in Setauket, New York. This initiative aims to enhance water quality and local oyster populations while providing students with hands-on experience in aquaculture techniques, scientific data collection, and public education.
What you'll do#
- Work directly with the Cornell Shellfish Biologist and Aquaculture Assistant.
- Maintain and support the upkeep of the shellfish grow-out system (FLUPSY).
- Collect scientific monitoring data regarding shellfish growth, survival rates, and water quality parameters such as temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen.
- Assist staff in providing general information about the program to the public.
What you'll need#
- Must be a resident of the Hamlet of Setauket currently enrolled in high school or college.
- Knowledge of natural, plant, or marine science.
- Ability to work outdoors under potentially adverse field conditions and perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 40 lbs and handling heavy gear.
- Ability to follow instructions carefully and work effectively with the public.
- Preferred: Enrollment in a local high school science or marine science program, experience with scientific sampling, and access to a vehicle with a valid driver's license.

- Location: Setauket, New York.
- Term: Summer 2026 (July 1st through August 28th).
- Schedule: Part-time, 12-20 hours per week.
- Status: Paid internship.
