Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County is offering a paid internship to support its Marine Fisheries Program. This role focuses on at-sea data collection for an ongoing Jonah crab research study, providing hands-on experience in applied marine science and fisheries monitoring. You will work alongside commercial fishermen and fisheries scientists.
What you'll do#
- Participate in fieldwork aboard commercial fishing vessels 1–2 days per week.
- Assist with biological sampling and data collection while at sea.
- Perform data entry and review in the office 1–2 days per week.
- Maintain an average schedule of approximately 3 days per week.
What you'll need#
- Physical capability to perform strenuous tasks, including heavy lifting and working long hours in unpredictable marine conditions.
- Prior experience aboard vessels.
- Familiarity with fieldwork or scientific research protocols.
- A reliable means of transportation to accommodate variable fishing trip times.
- This role is open to students in fields including Biology, Environmental Engineering, Finance, Public Health, Agriculture, Chemistry, Statistics, or Criminal Justice.

- Location: Riverhead, New York.
- Term: Summer 2026 (July 1, 2026 – September 18, 2026).
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Compensation: $19 per hour at 24 hours per week.
