About the role#
The Nurse Associate Externship is a paid, 10-week program for nursing students. You will work one-on-one with Registered Nurses in our inpatient acute care units. This role allows you to gain clinical experience while learning from nurse educators and fellow externs in a classroom setting. The program runs during the summer of 2027.
What you'll do#
- Perform basic patient care tasks under the supervision of an RN.
- Help patients with personal care, daily living activities, and transfers.
- Monitor patient conditions and report any abnormal physical, mental, or emotional changes to your supervisor.
- Maintain clean and orderly patient rooms.
- Attend all required educational classes.
- Perform advanced skills like medication administration or IV therapy if you are concurrently enrolled in a corresponding school course.
- Focus on your professional growth through formal and informal education.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited BSN program with less than one year until graduation, or an ADN program with less than two classes remaining.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
- Critical thinking skills and the ability to make decisive judgments.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision in a stressful environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English, along with basic math skills.
- Physical ability to perform full body motions, including lifting and moving patients, as well as extensive standing and walking.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, on-site position.
- Locations include Cleveland Clinic Main Campus, Fairview Hospital, Hillcrest Hospital, and Akron General Medical Center.
- You must be able to exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally to move objects.
