About the role#
The City of Starkville is looking for an intern to join the Utilities team. This role focuses on the installation, maintenance, and renovation of landscapes on public rights-of-way and easements. You will work on projects following utility repairs, including erosion control, vegetation establishment, and minor hardscaping. This position involves planning, scheduling, and executing landscape projects while coordinating with internal teams and the public.
What you'll do#
- Complete landscape contracting projects after utility repairs are finished.
- Inspect construction sites to assess conditions and determine solutions.
- Prioritize and schedule repair work while managing your own time.
- Initiate requisitions to obtain necessary supplies and services.
- Operate and maintain landscape equipment to ensure it remains functional.
- Document work progress through notes, photos, and daily reports.
- Troubleshoot landscaping issues and provide customer service to the public.
- Apply departmental policies consistently across all assignments.
What you'll need#
- Current coursework in Landscape Contracting, Building Construction Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience performing landscaping, land management, or outdoor manual labor.
- Proficiency using small mechanized equipment and hand tools.
- A valid Driver’s License and an acceptable motor vehicle record.
- Ability to lift objects weighing up to 75 lbs and work in all types of weather conditions.
- Capability to perform physical tasks like bending, stooping, and walking on uneven terrain for long periods.
