About the role#
As an intern on the laser source reliability team, you will focus on investigating adhesion failure mechanisms. You will work to identify the variables that influence these failures and develop methods to improve robustness. This role is based in San Jose and requires full-time, on-site attendance from May to August 2027.
What you'll do#
- Build an understanding of adhesion failure mechanisms and identify contributing variables like substrate material, surface preparation, and epoxy selection.
- Design a structured Design of Experiments (DOE) to isolate dominant variables.
- Define and apply environmental stress, specifically 85C/85% RH damp heat.
- Execute testing and analyze the resulting data.
- Translate your findings into actionable recommendations for improving adhesion robustness.
What you'll need#
- You are currently pursuing a degree in Photonics, Material Science, Physics, or a related engineering field.
- You have a background in materials science, mechanical engineering, or chemical engineering.
- Familiarity with adhesives, epoxies, surface preparation, and basic surface chemistry concepts.
- A working knowledge of, or a willingness to learn, statistical experimental design methods.
- Comfort using data analysis tools such as Excel, JMP, Minitab, or Python.
- Hands-on lab skills, including careful sample handling, precision measurement, and operation of environmental chambers or test equipment.
- Strong documentation habits and attention to detail when tracking experimental variables.
Location & details#
- Location: San Jose, California.
- Term: Summer 2027 (May to August).
- Status: This is a paid, full-time internship.
- Note: This position is on-site. There is no relocation or immigration support provided, with the exception of F1 visa holders.
