Firmware Engineer (Internship)

About the role#

As a Firmware Engineer intern, you will architect and develop firmware and microcontroller subsystems for our SoC and systems products. Firmware is central to our product functionality, and you will play a key role in implementing the features that differentiate our technology. You will work closely with our hardware team and engage in customer-focused efforts to ensure product requirements are fully met.

What you'll do#

• Architect and develop firmware and microcontroller subsystems.
• Implement major differentiating features for Astera Labs products.
• Collaborate with the hardware team to integrate firmware and hardware solutions.
• Participate in testing and debugging processes using tools like JTAG and trace logs.
• Develop firmware to execute on-chip microcontrollers.
• Utilize C or C++ for firmware development and Python for scripting.
• Manage developer workflows using SCM tools like git, code reviews, and CI.

What you'll need#

• Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or an equivalent field.
• Completion of one or more co-op terms in firmware or embedded software development.
• Completion of one or more courses in Real Time Operating Systems (RTOS) or equivalent project experience.
• Proficiency in C or C++ and Python.
• Ability to formulate technical theories and ask well-thought-out questions to assist in debugging complex systems.
• Authorized to work in Canada and available for a minimum of 4 months.
• Experience with software build environments, gcc/make, PyTest, or GoogleTest is considered an asset.
• Familiarity with PCIe, CXL, or Ethernet firmware development is a plus.
