McMullan Arts Leadership Internship, Prints and Drawings

About the role#

The Prints and Drawings department at the Art Institute of Chicago offers an internship focused on professional development within a museum setting. This role provides training in identifying print and drawing techniques, handling works on paper, utilizing collection database software, and performing object-based research. Interns gain experience in museum policy, including ethics and security, while working within the Jean and Steven Goldman Study Center. This position is part of a museum-wide cohort and includes mentorship and professional development programming.

What you'll do#

• Complete research projects as assigned by curators.
• Assist the study room manager in preparing the study room for visitors.
• Facilitate daily operations of the Prints and Drawings study room.
• Safely move art objects to and from their home locations.
• Attend weekly check-ins with the position’s mentors.
• Support the work of Prints and Drawings staff as needed.
• Participate in intern cohort professional development programs and museum practice seminars.

What you'll need#

• Current undergraduate or graduate student, or a recent graduate (within one year of graduation).
• Major or focus in art history, studio art, museum studies, or a related field.
• Demonstrated interest in Prints and Drawings as a curatorial field and area of study.
• Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to multitask and be flexible when appropriate.
• Detail-oriented mindset and organizational skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Suite and Google Suite.
• Applicants must be based in or attending school in the Chicagoland area.

Location & details#

• Location: Chicago, Illinois (On-site).
• Schedule: Part-time, 14 hours per week, Monday–Friday.
• Compensation: Paid at $17.50 per hour.
• Term: 32-week position.
