McMullan Arts Leadership Intern, Research Center - Libraries

About the role#

The McMullan Arts Leadership Internship at the Art Institute of Chicago’s Research Center provides an opportunity for students to gain experience in library operations within a museum setting. This role focuses on documenting the provenance of library collection items, including rare books, by investigating primary sources and physical markers such as book plates and margin notes. The intern will join a museum-wide cohort and receive mentorship while contributing to the Ryerson and Burnham Library.

What you'll do#

• Compile data from in-house sources to create a spreadsheet documenting the origins of library books.
• Enter relevant information into the library database using a structured vocabulary.
• Collaborate with the Library Director and the Associate Director of Access Services to refine project focus.
• Participate in regular departmental meetings and attend museum practice seminars.
• Prepare and deliver a presentation to the Research Center staff summarizing project outcomes.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in or recent graduation from an undergraduate or graduate program, with preference for those interested in or pursuing a Library or Information Science Masters degree.
• Must be based in the Chicagoland area or attending school in the region for the duration of the term.
• Meticulous attention to detail.
• Proficiency in data entry and experience working with library databases and spreadsheets.
• Ability to perform physical tasks such as pushing book carts, bending, and lifting up to 20 pounds.

Location & details#

• Location: On-site in Chicago, Illinois.
• Term: Fall 2026 through April 2027 (32 weeks).
• Schedule: Part-time, 14 hours per week (up to 448 total hours).
• Compensation: This is a paid position.
