About the role#

The McMullan Arts Leadership Internship in Experience Design provides an opportunity for an early-career designer to refine their skills within the Art Institute of Chicago’s creative studio. This role focuses on visual design across various museum touchpoints, including exhibitions, print materials, digital products, and brand identity. Interns join a museum-wide cohort, receive mentorship from field practitioners, and participate in professional development programs and museum practice seminars.

What you'll do#

• Support creative concepts by researching design inspiration, interpreting briefs, and generating ideas for exhibitions, campaigns, and brand work.
• Assist the design team with production across visual formats including exhibition graphics, wayfinding, signage, marketing collateral, and moving images.
• Participate in the design process, including group critiques and feedback sessions.
• Contribute to authentic and original creative work that reflects the museum's identity.
• Support the institution’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity by treating all colleagues and visitors with respect.

What you'll need#

• Current undergraduate or graduate student, or a recent graduate (within one year of graduation).
• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat Pro.
• Ability to balance multiple projects in a studio environment.
• Comfort working in a team, contributing to group discussions, and receiving constructive feedback.
• Strong interest in typographic skills and grid systems.
• Applicants must be based in or attending school in the Chicagoland area for the duration of the internship.

Location & details#

• Location: On-site in Chicago, Illinois.
• Schedule: Part-time, 14 hours per week (up to 448 total hours over 32 weeks).
• Work days occur between Monday and Friday.
• Compensation: Paid at $17.50 per hour.
