About the role#
Annapolis Cat Hospital and Bay Ridge Animal Hospital offer a DVM student externship program designed to provide practical experience in a small animal practice. This program supports your transition from the classroom to clinical practice by allowing you to work alongside our veterinary team. You will be assigned a mentor to help you meet the learning objectives defined by your college or your own specific goals. We offer flexible rotations lasting between two and eight weeks, though most students choose two or three weeks. Your schedule will include days, evenings, and weekends. A stipend of $250 per week is provided for this program.
What you'll do#
Under the supervision of a mentor doctor, you will participate in all aspects of patient care including:
- Gather patient histories.
- Perform physical examinations.
- Develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
- Scrub in to surgery.
- Assist in the management of medical cases.
- Provide wellness care.
- Develop client communication skills.
- Polish technical skills.
- Produce appropriate medical records, such as SOAPs.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited DVM program.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Current professional liability insurance, such as AVMA PLIT coverage.
- A professional attitude and adherence to the ethical standards of our practice.
