About the role#
Maritime Digital Production creates the systems behind our build chain, including data pipelines, workflow tools, and applied intelligence. Raw factory data is often unstructured and difficult to interpret. We need someone to build the vocabularies, hierarchies, and metadata standards that give this data meaning. You will work alongside data and manufacturing engineers to ensure our models reflect how work actually happens on the floor.
What you'll do#
- Develop and maintain controlled vocabularies for equipment, materials, processes, and locations.
- Build asset hierarchies and naming conventions to structure plant-floor data into a consistent model.
- Write and apply metadata schemas for industrial data sources, documenting field definitions and usage.
- Catalog data sources and maintain entries in the team's data catalog, including provenance and ownership.
- Audit existing tags and data models for inconsistencies or gaps and propose corrections.
- Document standards and authoring guidelines to ensure naming consistency.
- Collaborate with engineers to verify that models accurately represent physical operations.
- Present your work to the team at the end of the session.
What you'll need#
- Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Library Science, Information Science, Knowledge Management, Archival Studies, Linguistics, or a related field.
- Must be returning to school at the end of the internship to continue academic studies.
- U.S. Person status is required due to access to export-controlled information. U.S. clearance eligibility may be required.
- Ability to complete a 16 to 24-week in-person co-op in winter 2027.
- Coursework or project experience in metadata, cataloging, taxonomy, controlled vocabularies, or classification systems.
- Familiarity with metadata standards and modeling approaches such as Dublin Core, SKOS, RDF, or OWL.
- Exposure to data catalog tooling, knowledge graphs, or ontology editors like Protégé.
- Basic scripting skills in Python or SQL for inspecting and transforming data.
- Coursework in digital curation, data governance, or information architecture.
- Strong attention to detail and patience for working through ambiguity.
- Clear writing skills for documentation that is intended to last.
- Genuine interest in manufacturing and the physical systems behind the data.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid, on-site co-op position located in Santa Ana, California.
- The term is Winter 2027.
