About the role#
Ameresco is seeking students to join the Smart Building Solutions Group for hands-on experience with building automation and direct digital controls. This internship focuses on real-world project work, mirroring the responsibilities of a Level 1 DDC Controls Technician. You will work alongside experienced technicians, engineers, and project managers to install, test, and maintain building automation systems.
What you'll do#
- Assist with the installation of control panels, sensors, actuators, and field devices under the supervision of senior technicians.
- Pull, label, route, and terminate control wiring following company standards and electrical codes.
- Perform device checkout, testing, and verification of installed equipment.
- Support point-to-point testing, startup activities, and commissioning efforts.
- Identify and resolve wiring, communication, and device-related issues.
- Use diagnostic software, test meters, and troubleshooting tools to support field operations.
- Document installation progress through daily reports, as-built drawings, redline markups, and project notes.
- Gain exposure to DDC programming, building automation system graphics, network communications, and controls integration.
- Collaborate with project teams to support successful execution.
- Follow all company and jobsite safety requirements.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an Associate Degree program in HVAC, HVACR, Building Automation, Electro-Mechanical Technology, or a related field.
- Entering the second year of an applicable degree program by Summer 2027, or equivalent interest in building controls experience.
- Basic understanding of HVAC, electrical systems, or controls from coursework or projects.
- Ability to read and follow technical documentation.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn.
- Comfort working in office environments, mechanical rooms, and active construction sites.
- Ability to lift, carry, and work with standard controls installation tools.
- A valid driver's license and the ability to travel regionally for project assignments.
