About the role#
Building Controls and Services, Inc. (BCS) is seeking a Controls Engineer Intern to support the design, installation, and maintenance of building automation and HVAC systems. Working under the supervision of the Controls Team Lead, you will contribute to projects that help commercial, healthcare, and educational facilities operate efficiently. This is an on-site, full-time internship based in Overland Park, Kansas.
What you'll do#
- Order materials and enter database and programming information for assigned jobs.
- Create and install new software and perform troubleshooting functions.
- Support project documentation, including system layouts, submittals, network layouts, and as-built drawings.
- Assist with sales estimating, including determining task completion times and correlating labor and material pricing.
- Generate RFIs and determine when change orders are necessary.
- Assist with installation, startup, certification, and turnover of controls projects.
- Provide customer service and technical assistance to clients and internal staff.
- Stay current with software by studying manuals and vendor resources.
- Participate in 40 hours of continuing education annually.
What you'll need#
- Currently working toward a bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, or architectural engineering.
- Technical training and strong problem-solving skills.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, safety rules, and procedure manuals.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD drafting standards and Windows Operating System environments.
- Strong mathematical ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Organized approach with high attention to detail.
- Valid driver license.
- Preferred: Minimum one year of experience in engineering systems or systems service.
- Preferred: Knowledge of automation systems, HVAC, and electrical concepts.
