About the role#
We are looking for an intern to own an experimental program from start to finish. You will build a benchtop induction furnace system to replicate our Direct Conversion Process. Your goal is to determine how to control and maintain consistency in the depth of conversion at the nanoscale. You will work directly with our engineering team, including our founder and Chief Technology Officer, to turn your findings into recommendations for our production scale. This is a full-time, paid position for a duration of 4 to 6 months.
What you'll do#
- Specify, assemble, instrument, debug, and commission a small induction furnace test system.
- Design and run test campaigns to understand depth of conversion, including the test matrix and run plans.
- Identify and measure variables to collect large, time-aligned, real-time datasets.
- Apply statistical and machine-learning models to test cause and effect, using AI coding tools to accelerate your work.
- Recommend process changes and next steps based on your data.
- Translate benchtop findings into practical recommendations for scaling production.
- Maintain clean documentation and datasets so results transfer effectively to the engineering team.
- Follow safe lab and shop practices regarding high-temperature equipment, induction systems, and process gases.
What you'll need#
- Current graduate student (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Strong juniors and seniors with relevant hands-on experience will also be considered.
- Hands-on mechanical ability with experience building, diagnosing, or rebuilding equipment.
- Comfort working in a shop or lab environment with tools, wiring, and instrumentation.
- Ability to turn experimental runs into clean, time-aligned datasets.
- Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or equivalent tools for data analysis and modeling.
- Experience with AI coding tools and LLMs.
- Coursework or lab experience in high-temperature processing, heat transfer, thermodynamics, ceramics, or process control.
- Familiarity with furnaces, induction heating, vacuum systems, thermocouples, or pyrometry.
- Experience with materials characterization tools like SEM or mechanical testing.
- Clear, concise technical writing skills.
- High personal integrity and a demonstrated respect for safety protocols.
Location & details#
- This position is based on-site in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
- The schedule is four 10-hour days, Monday through Thursday.
- This role requires access to ITAR/EAR-controlled technical data. Applicants must be U.S. persons as defined by ITAR regulations.
- Employment is contingent upon a background check and drug test.
