About the role#
The ACLU of North Carolina is hiring legal interns for the Summer 2027 term. This is a full-time, 10-week position based in our Durham office. Interns work directly with our legal team on civil rights impact litigation and advocacy projects. You must maintain a North Carolina residence during the internship.
What you'll do#
- Conduct legal and policy research on various civil rights topics.
- Assist with client interviews and collaborate with coalition partners and community members.
- Prepare affidavits, briefs, and other court documents.
- Help prepare for depositions and court appearances, including attending proceedings.
- Investigate new civil impact litigation, gather facts, and develop potential legal claims.
- Support community and public education efforts.
What you'll need#
- Completion of your first year of law school.
- Ability to perform thorough legal research and summarize findings clearly.
- Strong writing and oral communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts in plain language.
- Initiative to troubleshoot issues and see projects through to completion.
- Ability to take direction and work well within a multidisciplinary team.
- Respect for the lived experiences of others.
- A commitment to civil rights, civil liberties, and the mission of the ACLU.
Location & details#
- Location: Durham, North Carolina.
- Term: Summer 2027 (10-week commitment).
- Status: Full-time, paid internship with a stipend of $8,400. Note that this amount is offset by any external funding secured through your law school or other sources.
