Autumn internships have a reputation for being the ones you apply to after everything else has fallen through. That reputation is wrong, and it is costing students a season. Fall 2026 internships are open right now, there are fewer applicants competing for them than in any summer cycle, and the window closes in weeks rather than months.
As of 8 August 2026 there are 1,966 fall 2026 internships open across 689 companies, and 354 of them were posted in the past seven days. We re-check every company career site we track on a 15-minute cycle, across 200,000+ sites, so that is a current number rather than a snapshot from last week.
Why the fall window is the shortest one of the year#
Summer hiring runs on a long, well-publicised calendar. Autumn hiring does not. Employers post fall roles when they know their headcount for the term, which is typically late July through September, and they need someone starting within weeks. The lead time between a fall posting going live and the seat being filled is often a fraction of the summer equivalent.
That compression cuts both ways. It means you have less time. It also means far fewer people apply, because most students have mentally closed the book on the cycle by August.
So what does that mean for you? A fall application lands in a pile of dozens rather than thousands, in front of a recruiter who needs the role filled this month.
