About the role#
Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. is seeking civil, structural, or materials engineering students for a Summer 2027 internship at the Janney Technical Center in Northbrook, Illinois. You will join either the Materials Engineering or Structural Testing and Instrumentation groups to assist project teams with forensic investigations and technical problem-solving. This is a full-time, paid position.
What you'll do#
- Perform hands-on forensic investigations, condition assessments, and construction observations.
- Survey and document distress, conduct field testing, and collect data and material samples.
- Analyze field data and research historic materials, construction documents, and governing codes.
- Develop and implement specialized laboratory or field-testing programs.
- Draft and prepare client deliverables, including construction documents, specifications, and reports.
- Apply instrumentation systems and data collection tools.
- Complete structural analysis of concrete, steel, wood, and masonry systems.
What you'll need#
- Current student in junior or senior year of a bachelor’s program or a graduate program in civil, structural, or materials engineering.
- Excellent academic standing, strong work ethic, and integrity.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, adapt to changing demands, and maintain attention to detail.
- Effective verbal, graphical, and written communication skills.
- Enthusiasm for solving problems and curiosity about how things work.
- Ability to perform inspections of buildings and structures, including work at heights.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 50 lbs and work in outdoor temperature extremes.
- Ability to safely operate ladders, scaffolds, and lifts.
- Medically fit to use respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment.
- Ability to travel and a valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle.
