About the role#
The Engineering Intern role provides hands-on experience supporting operations within a large-scale coal mining organization. You will work alongside experienced engineers, mine management, and plant personnel to apply engineering principles in a real-world mining environment. This position balances office-based engineering tasks with significant time spent in the field to observe and learn from active mining operations.
What you'll do#
- Partner with underground mining and engineering personnel to build a comprehensive understanding of daily mining operations, including continuous and longwall mining methods.
- Assist with mine planning and scheduling activities to understand how short-term and long-term plans translate into daily operations.
- Support engineering projects through field studies, data collection, measurements, and technical documentation such as reports, maps, and drawings.
- Participate in projects focused on improving plant productivity, reliability, quality, and cost performance.
- Investigate production and engineering challenges to assist in developing practical solutions.
- Collect and analyze data related to equipment performance, maintenance, and mining processes.
- Adhere to all safety policies and MSHA regulations while maintaining situational awareness in industrial and mining environments.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a college or university student.
- Pursuit of a degree in Mining, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Maintenance of satisfactory academic standing.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Excel.
- Ability to learn and utilize engineering and mine planning software.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to communicate effectively.
- Willingness to work in both office and field environments, including underground and surface mining locations.
