About the role#
The Jim Welch Newsroom Internship Program offers early-career journalists the chance to gain experience in a professional newsroom. This is a full-time, paid position based in Montpelier. We accept applications on a rolling basis for three periods throughout the year: Spring, Summer, and Fall.
What you'll do#
- Produce clear and concise stories on both breaking news and enterprise projects.
- Provide coverage that is aggressive, responsible, and fair.
- Cultivate news sources to support future reporting.
- Use data, public records requests, and narrative storytelling to enrich your work.
- Communicate clearly and respectfully with sources, editors, and colleagues.
- Apply photographic and multimedia skills, including audio and video, to your stories.
- Participate in news meetings and engage in an active exchange of learning with your mentor.
- Consult with editors regarding source anonymity and report any necessary corrections or clarifications promptly.
- Stay informed on reporting from other state and local news outlets.
What you'll need#
- Early-career journalist status.
- Ability to work in-person in Vermont.
- Relevant academic background in Journalism, Communications, or English.
