About the role#
The Industrial Design Intern will contribute to the Hardware development function at our Durham headquarters. This position involves a mix of design and production work, with approximately 25 percent of the time dedicated to design and 75 percent to production tasks. You will participate in product development meetings and brainstorming sessions while collaborating with the team to communicate design ideas.
What you'll do#
- Use SolidWorks to create first-pass CAD for new concepts and iterations.
- Prove out design concepts using 3D printing and other modeling methods.
- Perform industry research and create presentations based on your findings.
- Generate user interfaces for concept products.
- Build simple mockups using materials such as foam, foamcore, or wood.
What you'll need#
- Proficiency in SolidWorks and basic CAD skills.
- Working knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, and PowerPoint.
- Experience with basic shop tools, including hand tools and bench-top power tools.
- Strong written and visual presentation skills.
- Ability to communicate ideas effectively in both in-person and virtual settings.
- Understanding of the design process and basic research skills.
- Hand sketching skills and experience with 3D printer usage are preferred.
- Pursuing a degree in Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, or Media Studies.

- Location: Durham, North Carolina.
- Term: Fall 2026 (September 14 through December 4).
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Hours: Approximately 20 hours per week, with a schedule determined by you and your manager.
