About the role#
This externship program offers veterinary students practical experience in a small animal practice. We work with you to meet your specific learning goals or those defined by your college curriculum. You will be assigned a mentor doctor who provides instruction and evaluates your performance throughout your time here.
What you'll do#
Externs participate in daily patient care alongside our veterinary team. You will:
- Gather patient histories and perform physical examinations.
- Develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
- Scrub in to surgery and assist in managing medical cases.
- Provide wellness care to patients.
- Develop client communication skills and polish technical abilities.
- Produce medical records including SOAPs.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited DVM program.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Proof of professional liability insurance, with a certificate of coverage submitted at the time of application. We recommend AVMA PLIT.
- A professional demeanor and adherence to our practice standards.
Location & details#
- This role is based in New Orleans, Louisiana.
- The position is on-site and full-time.
- This is a paid externship with a stipend of $250 per week.
- Rotations are flexible, typically ranging from two to eight weeks, and include day, evening, and weekend shifts.

The Cat Practice provides veterinary services in New Orleans. The facility operates in the Lower Garden District. It focuses exclusively on the treatment of cats. The business is organized as a partnership and employs between 2 and 10 people.
