About the role#
The Program Policy Fellow supports the Access and Eligibility Services (AES) division during the Texas legislative session. You will work alongside policy professionals and subject-matter experts to analyze, document, and coordinate the impact of proposed legislation on programs that provide food, medical coverage, and cash assistance to Texans. This temporary fellowship offers practical experience in public policy, government operations, and project coordination.
What you'll do#
- Monitor and track proposed legislation, bill amendments, committee activity, and legislative deadlines.
- Review and summarize legislative materials to identify potential impacts on program policy and operations.
- Conduct research using federal and state statutes, regulations, and policy guidance.
- Coordinate with staff and experts to gather information and document program impacts.
- Draft, edit, and organize bill summaries, policy analyses, briefing materials, and status reports.
- Maintain legislative trackers, assignment records, and reference materials.
- Participate in meetings and workgroups to document decisions and action items.
- Translate complex legislative and regulatory information into concise formats for leadership and staff.
- Assist with time-sensitive requests from agency leadership.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a college or graduate program, or recent graduate status.
- Coursework in public policy, public administration, political science, government, public health, health care administration, communications, English, or business administration.
- Experience conducting research and preparing written summaries, analyses, reports, or presentations.
- Experience organizing information and managing multiple assignments or deadlines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Graduate-level coursework or a graduate degree is preferred.
- Knowledge of the Texas legislative process is preferred.
- Experience with health and human services programs or public-sector programs is preferred.
