Respiratory Therapist - Student Extern

About the role#

The Respiratory Therapist Student Extern provides respiratory care to non-critical patients across all age groups. This role involves applying clinical respiratory judgment to implement care programs and maintaining professional practice standards within the clinical setting. The extern communicates necessary information and makes recommendations to physicians and nursing staff as appropriate.

What you'll do#

• Ensure each assigned patient receives high-quality care.
• Comply with all department and hospital policies, procedures, and safety regulations, including The Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.
• Maintain a safe environment by recognizing potential hazards, initiating appropriate follow-through, and participating in safety education programs.
• Keep work and break areas clean, stocked, and free of clutter in compliance with environmental rounds.
• Promptly report unsafe conditions, injuries, or malfunctioning equipment.
• Contribute to department quality and performance improvement.
• Apply knowledge of Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) and Core Measures patient care standards.
• Ensure the professional business operation of the department.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in a course of study leading to graduation, specifically within the clinical portion of an approved respiratory care education program.
• Alternatively, a graduate of an approved respiratory care program with an active application for licensure with the Texas Medical Board (TMB) and eligibility for NBRC credentialing as a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).
• Current BLS Certification for Healthcare.
• Fluency in spoken and written English.
• Relevant academic background in Biomedical Sciences, Kinesiology, Nursing, or Public Health.
