About the role#
The SPCA of Texas is hiring a Veterinarian Intern to provide care for owned and sheltered animals. You will work under the supervision of the Chief Medical Officer. This role involves clinical work, surgical procedures, and supporting our shelter operations. You will be expected to work 5 days per week, with shifts occurring between 7am and 7pm. This schedule may include weekends and holidays, and you may occasionally work more than 8 hours in a day or 40 hours in a week.
What you'll do#
- Perform routine and sick examinations, preventative care, emergency triage, heartworm treatment, dental procedures, and soft tissue surgeries.
- Examine, diagnose, and treat diseases and injuries in dogs, cats, livestock, and exotics.
- Administer and monitor controlled substances while maintaining complete patient records.
- Apply herd health principles alongside individual animal care.
- Mentor technical support staff and act as an ambassador for the organization.
- Help develop protocols for sanitation, feeding, disease prevention, and population management.
- Ensure all work follows SPCA of Texas protocols and maintains high standards of care.
What you'll need#
- A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent.
- A Texas Veterinary License and a DEA license, or the ability to obtain both before starting.
- Current licensure in good standing to practice in Texas.
- Proof of professional liability insurance.
- Strong surgical skills and medical knowledge.
- Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 40 pounds.
- Decision-making, time-management, and communication skills.
- A commitment to professional development and growth.
