The Regulatory Support Bureau offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in environmental permitting and compliance. This internship involves a mix of office-based research and field-based inspections. Interns contribute to the management of water resources by supporting staff with data analysis, regulatory correspondence, and site monitoring. This is a year-round, on-site position based in Sarasota, Florida.
What you'll do#
- Draft professional correspondence, including letters and reports regarding permit condition requirements.
- Compile and review data from established files, databases, maps, and technical publications.
- Compare active construction sites against approved plans and permit conditions to identify and summarize deviations.
- Participate in meetings regarding regulatory matters and help resolve issues of noncompliance.
- Assist with compliance inspections for Environmental Resource Permitting, Water Use Protection, and Well Construction programs.
- Route citizen inquiries to appropriate staff and conduct research to support permitting and compliance team goals.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited college or university, with at least one year remaining in your program.
- Pursuing a degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Biology, or a related Physical Science.
- Minimum GPA of 2.5 for undergraduate students or 3.0 for graduate students.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Experience with GIS.
- Ability to work on-site in Sarasota, FL, typically up to 25 hours per week between Monday and Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

- Work Modality: On-site.
- Compensation: $16.00 per hour.
- Schedule: Year-round program with flexible scheduling based on academic requirements.
- Fieldwork: Involves travel within the District’s coverage area using a District vehicle; field conditions may include adverse weather, remote sites, and work around open water or wetlands.
