About the role#
Solcoa Industries is seeking a Metallurgical Engineering Intern to join our process team in Alameda, California. You will work alongside metallurgists, chemists, and technicians to transform rare earth magnet waste into high-purity metals. This role involves supporting reactor operations, assisting with alloy production, and maintaining precise documentation as we scale from lab processes to production.
What you'll do#
- Assist with high-temperature and high-vacuum reactor operations.
- Characterize feed materials and products using ICP-OES, SEM-EDS, and LECO O/N analysis.
- Execute furnace cycles, collect process data, and summarize results to guide design iterations.
- Maintain detailed logs of process parameters, equipment conditions, and sample tracking.
- Support the maintenance of hardware including vacuum systems, induction coils, thermocouples, and gas handling equipment.
- Contribute to a safety-first culture and continuous improvement on the facility floor.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a BS or MS in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
- Exposure to pyrometallurgy, electrometallurgy, or high-temperature processing through coursework or labs.
- Hands-on experience gained from labs, foundry work, internships, or personal projects involving furnaces, casting, or heat treatment.
- Strong attention to detail, disciplined documentation habits, and reliable follow-through.
- Ability to work in a hardware-centric environment and willingness to perform hands-on tasks.
- Preferred skills include experience with vacuum or inert-atmosphere furnace operation, familiarity with rare-earth metallurgy or molten salt electrolysis, thermodynamic analysis skills, welding or machining experience, and proficiency in Python or MATLAB.

- Compensation: $35 - $45 per hour plus bonus.
