About the role#
Short Pump Veterinary Hospital offers a flexible externship program for students currently enrolled in a DVM curriculum. This program provides hands-on experience in a small animal practice setting. You will work alongside our veterinary team to gain practical skills and prepare for your career after graduation. Externships typically last two to three weeks, though they can range from two to eight weeks depending on your school requirements. You will work a schedule that includes days, evenings, and weekends. A stipend of $250 per week is provided.
What you'll do#
Under the supervision of a mentor doctor, you will participate in all aspects of patient care. Your daily responsibilities include:
- Gathering patient histories.
- Performing physical examinations.
- Developing diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
- Scrubbing in to surgery.
- Assisting in the management of medical cases.
- Providing wellness care.
- Developing client communication skills.
- Polishing technical skills.
- Producing medical records (SOAPs).
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited DVM program.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Proof of professional liability insurance.
- A professional demeanor and commitment to the ethical standards of our practice.
Location & details#
This role is located in Glen Allen, Virginia. It is an on-site, full-time position with a rolling term.
