About the role#
SEI is seeking a Garden Education Nonprofit Leadership Fellow to transform school gardens into active learning environments. This full-time, ten-month fellowship focuses on connecting students to nature and fostering environmental stewardship. You will work across two elementary schools in San Francisco, designing hands-on experiences for students from Kindergarten through 5th Grade, including those in Special Day Classes.
What you'll do#
- Prepare for and teach multiple lessons per day to various grade levels.
- Adapt and implement the provided Energize Schools curriculum for your specific school site.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate indoor learning with outdoor garden experiences.
- Maintain and improve school gardens, including planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting edible and perennial crops.
- Engage parents and community volunteers in garden activities.
- Administer pre- and post-student assessments at the beginning and end of the school year.
- Track student attendance and participate in quarterly lesson observations with your Regional Supervisor.
What you'll need#
- A minimum of one year of experience teaching or working directly with youth.
- Experience with or a willingness to learn about gardening and farming.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- A demonstrated commitment to social justice and anti-racism.
- Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
- Access to a reliable mode of transportation, as the role involves frequent site visits and transporting materials.
- Preferred majors include Environmental Engineering, Agriculture, Psychology, Sociology, or Biology.
