About the role#
The Global Open Source team is seeking an intern to develop systems software for memory and storage pools that support reinforcement learning post-training for large language models. You will build a prototype using fabric-attached memory and SSD pools to measure effects on training progress, memory pressure, and recovery time. This role involves contributing to open-source ecosystems while supporting Samsung storage and memory technology research.
What you'll do#
- Profile the reinforcement learning post-training loop to identify memory-capacity limits, data-transfer overhead, storage stalls, and GPU idle time.
- Develop a runtime feature that coordinates bounded memory staging, asynchronous storage writes, prefetching, or capacity allocation across workers.
- Integrate features with existing reinforcement learning frameworks using training and checkpoint interfaces.
- Maintain snapshot consistency, policy-version provenance, buffer ownership, and durable checkpoint publication during asynchronous operations.
- Compare memory-only, storage-only, and combined pool configurations by analyzing throughput, GPU-hours, local-memory usage, and restart performance.
- Resolve resource management issues found in the host OS.
- Deliver correctness tests, reproducible experiments, design documentation, and code suitable for review and potential open-source contribution.
What you'll need#
- Current pursuit of a Masters or PhD in Computer Science.
- At least one academic quarter or semester remaining in your program.
- Programming experience in C, C++, or Rust.
- Ability to use Python or shell scripting for experiments and automation.
- Understanding of operating systems, memory management, concurrency, and computer architecture.
- Experience developing and debugging on Linux.
- Proficiency with Git and experience communicating technical results.
- Preferred experience includes CXL, NUMA, Device-DAX, mmap, shared-memory programming, or memory allocators.
- Preferred experience includes GPU programming, CUDA, DMA, or profiling memory and data-transfer performance.
- Preferred experience includes distributed systems, cache management, vllm, sglang, LLM inference, or open-source development.
Location & details#
- Location: San Jose, California.
- Modality: On-site.
- Employment type: Full-time.
- Compensation: Paid internship with relocation and housing support available for eligible candidates.
