About the role#
We are looking for a Purdue junior or senior to help design and build engineering prototypes. You will create mechanical parts, enclosures, and mounts that integrate sensors, electronics, and other hardware. This role involves iterative work to ensure prototypes function correctly for various communities of learners.
What you'll do#
- Create and modify CAD models for prototype parts and enclosures.
- Prepare and run FDM 3D prints, then check them for fit and function.
- Improve designs based on testing, assembly results, and user feedback.
- Help integrate electronics, wiring, and sensors into physical assemblies.
- Keep design files organized and maintain basic build documentation.
What you'll need#
- You are a junior or senior in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Engineering Technology, Industrial Design, or a related field.
- Experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Inventor, or Onshape.
- Hands-on experience with FDM 3D printing and basic prototyping.
- Ability to work independently and solve practical design problems.
- Interest in working with a diverse team, including virtual collaborators.
It is helpful if you have experience with:
- Designing for 3D printing, tolerances, and fasteners.
- Creating enclosures or mounts for electronics and sensors.
- Digital fabrication methods like laser cutting or CNC.
- Material selection, cable management, or environmental protection for prototypes.
