About the role#
The PPL R&D Department is seeking PhD Engineering students to join clean energy research projects starting in May 2026. This role focuses on areas such as renewable energy, energy storage, green hydrogen, sustainability, and carbon capture technologies. Interns will work part time during the academic semester and full time during the Summer 2026 term. This position offers the potential to transition into full-time employment upon graduation.
What you'll do#
- Plan and control all activities to maintain an accident-free workplace.
- Apply engineering and scientific principles to plan projects, collect data, and perform analysis.
- Gather and correlate data using established procedures.
- Coordinate research project results and prepare summaries for management.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and suggest new methods.
- Perform detailed engineering assignments involving calculations, tests, and analysis.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a PhD program in Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Chemical, Environmental, Industrial, Aerospace, or Biomedical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- A minimum 3.00 GPA.
- Availability to work part time during the semester and full time during the Summer 2026 semester.

- Locations: Lexington, Kentucky; Allentown, Pennsylvania; and Providence, Rhode Island.
- Modality: On-site.
- Travel: The role may include travel to various clean energy project sites across PPL Corporation, including locations in Allentown, Providence, and Louisville and Lexington, Kentucky. All travel expenses are covered.
