About the role#
Pound Ridge Veterinary Center offers a hands-on externship program for veterinary students. This program provides practical experience in a small animal practice to help you prepare for your career. You will work alongside our veterinary team to gain exposure to daily patient care and clinical operations. Your schedule will include a mix of day, evening, and weekend shifts. Each extern is assigned a mentor to help meet specific learning goals or college requirements, and you will receive a written evaluation upon completion of your rotation. We provide a stipend of $250 per week.
What you'll do#
You will participate in all aspects of patient care under the supervision of a mentor doctor. Your responsibilities include:
- Gathering patient histories
- Performing physical examinations
- Developing diagnostic and therapeutic plans
- Scrubbing in to surgery
- Assisting in the management of medical cases
- Providing wellness care
- Developing client communication skills
- Polishing technical skills
- Producing medical records (SOAPs)
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited DVM program
- Authorization to work in the United States
- Current professional liability insurance

This is an on-site, full-time externship based in Pound Ridge, New York. The program duration is flexible, typically ranging from two to eight weeks based on your college curriculum.
