About the role#
This is a full-time, paid internship based in Gwinn, Michigan, for the Summer 2027 term. You will work directly with our forestry teams to gain hands-on experience in land management, wood procurement, and harvest operations.
What you'll do#
- Measure and scale bolts for physical inventories at Gwinn and satellite yards, including computing cordage and ton equivalences.
- Conduct log quality checks on suppliers at weight scales and job sites.
- Assist with cruising stumpage sales and marking timber on Managed Forest Law lands in Wisconsin.
- Supervise producers during road building, maintenance, and harvest activities.
- Inspect active and completed permit sales to ensure compliance.
- Learn the logistics of trucking, rail, and barging operations.
- Participate in monthly safety requirements.
- Perform SFI harvest inspections to ensure compliance with Best Management Practices.
- Support the Wood Procurement Manager with residual markets, shipping logistics, and special projects involving pulpwood marketing.
- Assist in sale administration and learn the day-to-day responsibilities of a Procurement Forester.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program for Forestry, Science, Environmental Science, or a related field, with at least two years of college completed.
- Proficiency in MS Word and Excel, plus experience with GPS applications.
- Ability to read and interpret timber sale maps and use a compass.
- Strong planning, organization, and communication skills.
- High energy and adaptability.
- Ability to walk across all types of timber stands with uneven ground.
- A valid driver's license and a good driving record.
- Familiarity with GIS applications is preferred.
